Author Archives: Gets a Refresh and Plans for the Year

This site wouldn’t be of much value without our visitors so that’s why we want you to know that your feedback is important to us.  Among the things we’ve heard loud and clear from you are:

  1. The original eBay Calculator is great, don’t take it down!
  2. Handwriting fonts are nice but sometimes not the best choice.
  3. A dedicated mobile app would be sweet!

To address the first concern, we’ve decided to cancel the plan to decommission the original eBay Calculator.  The idea behind creating the new eBay Calculator was for it to eventually replace the original, but that was to the dismay of many users.  Instead, both the original and new eBay Calculators will remain up and running as the former is still used by many, and the latter offers the user interface responsiveness to support mobile web clients.

As you may have noticed, the look and feel of is now more consistent across all of our pages.  We’ve removed the handwriting font as it’s been a top complaint about our new calculators, and we’re now using a color scheme that is truer to the original eBay Calculator.  We’ve also introduced a fun new logo.  We hope the changes will improve the usability of the site and offer a more recognizable identity.

Some folks have been asking about a mobile app from us.  It’s easy to point out that our mobile-friendly eBay Calculator is designed to work on tablets and phones, but that’s not what they’re talking about.  They want something that can be installed on and launched natively from their mobile device, using the familiar user interface flows of that device.  We agree that nothing beats a dedicated mobile app so rest assured, we’re working on it.

Dear Friends of

We were saddened when we recently learned of the passing of the author of was a popular website that also offered an eBay Calculator and other tools to aid online sellers. According to a message on the website, the author passed away in an unfortunate accident and the site was being taken offline. Though we did not know the author personally, we believe he dedicated much of his time and effort in creating well-liked and widely used tools, and that his work will be greatly missed. We would like to convey our thoughts and condolences to those that knew him, and welcome any visitors looking for tools similar to those that he created.

Amazon Marketplace: Referral and Variable Closing Fees for Media vs Non-media Products

Amazon fees formula

Formerly, the calculations we had been using for a product’s Referral and Variable Closing Fees were based on the information provided in Amazon’s publicly available fee schedule.  According to this page, a Referral Fee is charged for the sale price of an item, though the page doesn’t specify whether the sale price includes the shipping price charged to the buyer.  Furthermore, non-media products (products excluding Books, Music, DVDs, Software, Video Games, and Video Game Consoles) are shown to have a Variable Closing Fee that is based on weight and shipping method, while media products have a Variable Closing Fee that depends solely on shipping method.

However, from recent experience on Amazon Marketplace and correspondence with Amazon Seller Support, we learned to revise our calculations.  The first revision involves the Referral Fee.  For media products, the Referral Fee excludes the shipping price from the sale price.  In contrast, the Referral Fee for non-media products includes the shipping price as part of the sale price.  Secondly, the Variable Closing Fee for non-media products is not based on weight or shipping method as described in the public fee schedule page mentioned above.  Instead, the Variable Closing Fee for non-media products is the Referral Fee charged on shipping paid by the buyer, and thus is not charged separately.  This information is detailed in the fee schedule found in Amazon’s Seller Central, which requires sellers to log in to access.

The Amazon Calculator has been updated in light of this information.  Non-media products will no longer produce a Variable Closing Fee and instead will have a Referral Fee that includes the shipping credit as part of the sale price.  Calculations for media products are not affected by this change.

March 9, 2013 Update: Amazon’s fee schedule appears to have been updated since this post was first published and is now consistent with what we’ve described.
